Agenda

Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia. Dr. Irakli Kobakhidze will talk on Georgia’s Democratic Reforms and Foreign Policy Priorities in a Challenging Environment in his public speech. András Simonyi, the Managing Director of the Center for Transatlantic Relations, will facilitate the conversation.

Situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Georgia regained its independence in 1991, declaring its aspiration to return its place in the European family and advance as a regional leader in democratic reforms.

Dr. Kobakhidze was elected as chairman of Georgian Parliament in October 2016, when his Georgian Dream party won overwhelmingly in general elections, securing constitutional majority in the national legislature. Having led the GD party’s successful election campaign, Irakli Kobakhidze, once elected chairman of parliament, initiated and successfully completed the process of constitutional reform, which re-oriented the country’s constitution towards the democratic principles of checks and balances, strengthening the legislature and bringing the government under more rigorous parliamentary oversight.

Irakli Kobakhidze is a constitutional lawyer by training, having earned his bachelor’s degree at Tbilisi State University, and then completing Master’s and Doctoral degrees in jurisprudence from the University of Düsseldorf in Germany. As professor of law, he teaches at Tbilisi State University and has authored several academic publications.
